Garcilaso de la Vega, El Inca, family coat of arms, printed 1609

In this presentation, Roger Chartier and John Pollack will discuss the recent acquisition of a copy of the folio first edition of Garcilaso de la Vega's Commentarios reales...de los Yncas (1st part), printed in Lisbon by Pedro Crasbeeck in 1609, in a contemporary binding. This chronicle is a crucial source for the history of the Incas, and its author, Garcilaso, was the son of an Inca noblewoman and a Spanish conquistador. What were the circumstances of its publication? They will also examine the 1688 English translation and the much later second edition of 1723, both of which were already held by the Kislak Center.
